# Configure performance questions

Performance questions are predefined question sets provided by the easyreview team. They give you a consistent, company-wide way to assess performance inside your feedback processes. You turn each performance question on individually and adapt it to your needs.

This article explains how to turn performance questions on and configure them in a feedback process's settings. For an overview of the available question types, see [What are performance questions?](/en/c/feedbacks/what-are-performance-questions).

:::info
This function is only available to users with the **HR employee** role.

## Configuration options

Each performance question you turn on offers the following settings:

### Question title

The question title is the text participants see in the questionnaire. Depending on the question type, there are one or two title fields:

* **Questions for both sides** (for example the overall performance assessment): two title fields — one for the feedback recipient (self-assessment) and one for the feedback giver (external assessment, for example the supervisor).
* **Questions for one side only** (for example satisfaction, development trend, attrition risk): one title field for the relevant perspective.

The title fields are pre-filled with default texts that you can change freely.

#### Placeholders in question titles

In the question titles for the external assessment (feedback giver), you can use placeholders that are automatically replaced with the relevant feedback recipient's data when shown in the questionnaire:

| Placeholder | Description |
|----|----|
| `[Salutation]` | The feedback recipient's salutation |
| `[First Name]` | The feedback recipient's first name |
| `[Last Name]` | The feedback recipient's last name |

The pre-filled default texts already contain the `[Salutation]` and `[Last Name]` placeholders, for example *"How do you rate the overall performance of \[Salutation\] \[Last Name\]?"*. You can remove the placeholders or combine them differently as needed.

### Answer options

For multiple-choice questions (overall performance assessment, development trend, attrition risk) you can change the labels of the answer options. For the overall performance assessment, you can also add or remove options:

* Click the **plus icon** next to an answer option to insert a new option below it.
* Click the **minus icon** to remove an answer option.

For the overall satisfaction question, you instead choose the **Number of gradations** from a dropdown (a star rating with 1 to 10 steps, default: 6).

### Required question

Tick the **Required question** checkbox to make the question mandatory for all participants. In the text field next to it, you can change the hint shown when a participant has not answered the question.

### Enable notes

Tick the **Enable notes** checkbox to give participants an extra free-text field below the question.

## Available performance questions

### Overall performance assessment

This question is shown as a multiple-choice question with a single possible answer. Both the feedback recipient (self-assessment) and the feedback giver (external assessment) answer it.

The default answer options are five steps, from "1 - insufficient to adequate" to "5 - outstanding to excellent". You can change the labels and add or remove options (at least one option is required).

### Overall satisfaction

This question is shown as a rating question (star rating). It is aimed only at the feedback recipient in the self-assessment. The feedback giver does not see it.

You can set the number of gradations from the dropdown (1 to 10, default: 6).

### Development trend

This question is shown as a multiple-choice question with three answer options. It is aimed only at the feedback giver (for example the supervisor). The feedback recipient does not see it.

The three default steps are "weaker", "stable" and "stronger". You can change the labels, but the number of options is fixed at exactly three.

### Risk of leaving the company

This question is shown as a multiple-choice question with three answer options. It is aimed only at the feedback giver (for example the supervisor). The feedback recipient does not see it.

The three default steps are "unlikely", "at risk" and "very likely". You can change the labels, but the number of options is fixed at exactly three.

## Visibility

The following table shows which performance questions are visible for which perspective:

| Performance question | Feedback recipient | Feedback giver |
|----|----|----|
| Overall performance assessment | Yes | Yes |
| Overall satisfaction | Yes | No |
| Development trend | No | Yes |
| Risk of leaving the company | No | Yes |

This visibility is fixed and cannot be changed.

## How they appear in results

Performance questions you have turned on are shown in a feedback's result report in their own summary area, separate from the regular questionnaire questions. The layout is as follows:

* **Overall performance assessment**: the answers of the feedback recipient and the feedback giver are shown side by side, so self- and external assessment can be compared directly.
* **Satisfaction and development trend**: these two questions are combined into one row — the feedback recipient's satisfaction on the left, the feedback giver's trend assessment on the right.

The placeholders in the question titles (for example `[Salutation]`, `[Last Name]`) are automatically replaced with the relevant feedback recipient's name in the results.
